Condition Scoring

Condition Scoring is assessment of the horses body condition using a numbering system.

There are many factors affecting when condition scoring horses and ponies. Most predominant is their feed intake but the other considerations of general health, fitness, age and pregnancy are all contributors.

Hands on is required when condition scoring to receive the true feedback when touching the horse to assess whether the relevant area is fat or muscle.

The horse stores fat at the following areas:

  • Neck
  • Shoulders
  • Ribs
  • Rump
  • Top of tail

Keeping condition score records of your horse is very useful and taking photos will help as when we see them every day it can be tricky to notice any changes.
